Melbourne is known for having an unpretentious, decidedly less ‘bling’ party scene than Sydney. Bars and clubs are more cool and edgy than designer and shiny, with a great live music scene and lots of laid-back lounges. The best bars in the city centre are hidden down narrow laneways and dim back-alleys and a lot of the action takes place in boho suburbs
such as St Kilda. Here is our pick of the top party areas in Australia’s most cosmopolitan city.

St Kilda
Whether you want chilled-out drinks in a laid-back bar or to dance until the early hours of the morning, this seaside suburb has it all. The action centres on Fitzroy Street and Acland Street, both of which are lined with great bars. On Sundays, head to the historic Hotel Esplanade (endearingly known as ‘The Espy’) at around sunset for its legendary parties, which feature a regular line-up of top local bands. The Prince of Wales on Fitzroy Street also plays host to great local and international bands and has a brilliant selection of beers on tap. Try Robarta and the Nest, also on Fitzroy Street, for a spot of late-night dancing or dress the part and sip cocktails created with house-infused vodka at basement bar Mink in Acland Street.

Fitzroy
Bohemian Fitzroy is packed with great pubs, bars and clubs, with most of the great ones located on Brunswick Street. Rowdy Little Creatures is a vast altar to Western Australia’s brewery of the same name and the cavernous, warehouse-style space makes it great for big groups. For top live music, the Evelyn Hotel is somewhat of a Fitzroy institution. Brilliant up-and-coming local bands play almost nightly, the drinks are reasonably priced and the atmosphere is electric.

Richmond
With a pub on every corner, Richmond is a night owl’s heaven. For some of the best cocktails you will ever taste, head to Der Raum – the innovative concoctions are so good that the list is chained to the bar! The Prince Alfred Hotel is an old local favorite that has recently undergone a makeover, transforming its front bar with rustic floorboards and a gleaming marble bar – its huge tables make it a top spot for groups and its extensive beer menu is a crowd-puller.

CBD
The best bars in the city centre are hidden away down the many laneways - generally the harder a bar is to find, the better it is! Little Collins Street has a number of gems – hit The Kitten Club for fabulous cocktails (plus a gorgeous retro powder room!) and Pony for chilled out drinks and a closing time of 7am, whilst martini connoisseurs will love the intimate Gin Palace. Honky Tonks in tiny Duckboard Place is a great venue to head to when you”re in the mood to dance – this swanky bar hosts top DJs that pump out funk, hip-hop, techno, disco and house from decks in the middle of a grand piano.

Emily Buckley has travelled the world in search of the best bars, pubs and clubs and regularly shares her finds with HotelClub.com, a leading accommodation website that specializes in offering hot deals on hotels around the globe, including hotels in Melbourne.

By Tom Ingrams

It may be a long journey to the other side of the world but once you are there, Australia’s welcome is well worth it. With breathtaking sights from the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge to the penguins on Philip Island, the Great Ocean Road and Ayres Rock, there is something to excite everyone.

Luxury hotels litter the East Coast from Sydney to Cape Tribulation whilst boutique boltholes spring up in and around metropolitan Melbourne. Coupled with designer shops, impressive resorts and every comfort imaginable, luxury travel is top of any down under adventure. Here are five of the best places to see:

1. Sydney

Often considered by many to be Australia’s real main city – rather than the capital Canberra – Sydney is overflowing with things to see and do. If views are your thing, catch a ferry from Circular Quay to Cremorne Point and marvel back at the city skyline. If you would rather enjoy the sights from the comfort of your 5-star hotel, booking a room at one of Sydney’s downtown lavish hotels – like the Shangri-La overlooking the harbour – is a must.

2. East Coast

Although a firm contender on the backpacker trail, Australia’s East Coast is also home to mile upon mile of luxurious hotels and resorts just waiting to take the weight off your feet. Nestled along the coastline from Sydney in the south to Cape Tribulation in the north, indulgence is never far away. For the ultimate in remote retreats, Hamilton Island has long been offering all the staples of luxury travel from soft fluffy towels to pampering sessions in the resorts spa.

3. Melbourne

A metropolitan mecca, Melbourne is abuzz with every kind of everything. A melting pot of eco travel and luxury travel, boutique boltholes are scattered around the city from the beaches of St Kilda to the hip areas of Fitzroy and Carlton and into the downtown central area and along the Yarra River.

4. Perth

Taking the crown as the hub of Australia’s quieter, but stunningly beautiful, west coast, Perth is still a firm fave for the luxury traveller. From villas with ocean views on Rottnest Island to eco lodges on the outskirts of the city, relaxing and putting your feet up is par for the course in this town. What Perth lacks in close proximity to other cities, it most definitely gains in having its finger well and truly on the pulse as far as treating yourself is concerned.

5.The Outback

The epicenter of Australia, the Outback is not only home to the country’s most remote wilderness but it also has some of the most luxurious accommodation you will find. Deluxe safari-esq tented cabins are just one way to enjoy a night of sleeping out under the stars.

Billed as Victoria’s wildlife island, you will be surprised to find the Grand Prix circuit nestles close to the world famous Penguin parade, the Koala Conservation Centre, Churchill Island Heritage Farm and the Nobbies Centre, a marine attraction where you can uncover the secrets of the Southern Seas with interactive displays allowing you to intermingle with seals, sharks and dolphins that abound in these waters.

I did say that it was a world of contrasts, so don’t forget the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory in your itinerary, where you can buy the delectable hand-made chocolates made on the Island.

Take a spectacular sunrise balloon ride over the Yarra Valley, one of Victoria’s beautiful winery regions. Home to 90 vineyards, surrounded by mountains you fly for approximately an hour over the early morning vineyards before ending your experience with a sumptuous champagne breakfast.

Café culture abounds in St Kilda and you will want to browse this fashionable bayside suburb of Melbourne with its diverse range of shops and eating venues. Don’t forget the Luna Park amusement park built in 1912, complete with its wooden roller coaster and other historic rides.

For the sports fans amongst you there is the very popular Sports Lovers Tour. Billed as city sightseeing with a difference you will explore the history and excitement of sporting Melbourne. Whichever sport is your particular favourite, be it tennis, cricket, rugby or football, find yourself sitting in the coaches’ box, imagining filing that important media story in the media facilities or smelling the liniment in the changing rooms!

For dinner with a difference, the Colonial tram car dinner is perfect! 1920′s splendour, but with modern day facilities so that not even a crystal glass quivers in your cosy, colonial period dining car. One way glass ensures privacy while traditional silver and white linen don the tables. This is one train ride you won’t forget in a hurry and booking is a must with the restaurant selling out weeks in advance.

Hop on the City Circle Tram ride for a free central Melbourne tour. Steeped in old world charm, these 1920′s brown and gold liveried tram cars are an appealing way to discover the city centre sights. The conductor on board provides valuable knowledge about the tourist attractions you might wish to see.

Spectacular Rhododendrons greet you as you head to The Dandenongs for the Spring flowering. Less than an hours drive from Melbourne, lies this rich hillside area which grows all manner of good things to eat, drink and appreciate, such as the display of Spring bulbs, Devonshire Cream teas and the Puffing Billy Steam Train that gently meanders its way through the beautiful landscape.

I think you will agree that luxury Australia travel is what you make of it. The luxury is in the doing!

I invite you to use these ideas to make the most of your luxury Australia travel and Melbourne.

If you are planning a special holiday and fancy a bit of pampering and luxury then you can find some fantastic places here in Australia.

By Jennifer Schillington

If you are planning a special holiday and fancy a bit of pampering and luxury then you can find some fantastic places here in Australia.

There are some wonderfully luxurious hotels, spas and resorts here in Australia as well as some indulgent experiences too. This article aims to highlight some of the best.

For the best luxury in Australia, these are my top 3 recommendations:

1) Hayman Island, The Whitsundays

If you fancy a beach resort holiday then the Whitsundays offers arguably the best beaches in Australia. The water is warm and a brilliant blue, and the beaches are a pristine white. This collection of islands offers a variety of accommodation but the best is Hayman Island. From the moment you step aboard their private boat to whisk you to the island with champagne in hand, you know you are in good hands.

Hayman won’t disappoint. The service is exceptional with your every wish being catered for. The accommodation is also of a very good standard and there is plenty to keep you occupied. Whether you are into diving or snorkeling or you fancy a day trip in a helicopter, you are sure to enjoy your stay here.

Prices start from around $445 AUD per night . If you do have more cash to splash then I would take a look at Voyages Lizard Island or Wilson Island as these are even more exclusive with fewer guests and even more prestigious accommodation.

2) Take a Ride on the Ghan

This is potentially the most scenic journey in Australia and it will be like no other journey that you have ever experienced. This train trip takes you from Adelaide all the way up to Darwin. It stops at Alice Springs and Katherine too. This takes you right through the Australian outback and the famous Red Centre. You will start to realise just how big Australia really is.

The trip itself is about 48 hours and the luxurious cabins will cost around $2000 AUD. It’s an experience that you will never forget.

3) Moondance Lodge – Enjoy Australian Wine

Arguably the best wine Region in Australia, the Margaret River is a great destination if you intend to visit the quieter West Coast of Australia. It is just 3 hours south of Perth and offers the visitor a unique experience. Not only can you enjoy the fine wines, you can also indulge in sumptuous food served by many of the wineries and then relax on the nearby pristine beaches.

The best place to stay in the Margaret River is Moondance Lodge. Set on a lake, this beautiful place has everything. It is centrally located to make exploring this region very straightforward. If you fancy some pampering then go to their spa. Or if you fancy something a little different, check out their trips and experiences.

Luxury on a budget

Not everyone can afford a 5 star holiday but there are ways to inject a little luxury into your holiday. Firstly, consider incorporating just one or two nights of total luxury into your itinerary. You could even make it a surprise for your other half.

What about planning a special day? A great idea is to pack a luxury picnic and enjoy some wonderful views. In Sydney you can hire a boat at Rose bay and cruise the Sydney harbour. No prior sailing knowledge is necessary and there are plenty of bays you can stop off at to enjoy your picnic.

Look out for bargains and last minute offers on luxury accommodation as you may just get lucky. Wotif.com is a good website to find last minute offers. I saw Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island at very reasonable rates. It turns out that a large party had recently cancelled and they needed to fill the rooms quickly.

Jennifer Schillington has nearly 5 years of experience in traveling Australia and has recently had a baby. Her website, http://www.realaustraliatravel.com offers useful information for organising your trip to Australia as well as where to go and what to do.
When compiling a list of things to do on a luxury travel itinerary, a visit to an organic spa would come somewhere close to the top and generously interspersed throughout, depending on the length of your travel. Well, the choices are many at most luxury travel destinations. Here’s why a trip down under to Australia is worth serious consideration.

Ask anyone who has travelled to Australia and they’ll have tales to tell of the tough immigration policies that won’t even let you bring along a wad of gum from abroad. While immigration officials are not the friendliest of folks, they most certainly do not derive any perverse pleasure from denying you the right to bring along a pretty orchid from Singapore or your pet tarantula from Africa just to see the gloom flood your face. They are merely doing their job. And it is their job to protect the fragile ecosystem of this unique landmass, down under, from foreign organic matter that may disrupt or even destroy the delicate balance.

For 50,000 years or more, the aboriginals have inhabited this part of the world and lived in harmony with the land, the water, the vegetation, the seasons, the wildlife, the rain, and the rock. They left no footprint on any of these elements unless it was a playful hop, skip, or jump that benefited both ways. They lived off the land, on the land, and by the land, as one with the land. They didn’t have hypertension, strokes or diabetes. What they had was clear skin and eyes that shone. They were Dreaming; the eternal truth that links the past, present, and future, and the people to their land.

Now what would this have to do with luxury travel, you might well ask. Having come to the sad conclusion that the faster the rat race the wearier the soul, people embark on luxury travel as a means of solace away from it all. They eagerly look around for new outlets, fresh pastures, and healthier alternatives to achieve that nirvana. The good news for all is that the Dreaming has been re-discovered here in Australia. More and more people are turning to the ancient earthy wisdom of the aboriginals to figure out modern ills. What was once considered good at best for some novelty value has now come to be recognized for its intrinsic truth. Now isn’t that the final destination of all travel?

The wisdom of the aboriginal way of life is now increasingly adapted to main stream life, but nowhere as much as in the world of luxury spas. The word organic that was bandied about as casually as bananas by monkeys, has now assumed its true significance. It has taken on its authentic avatar in the organic spas that are now standing apart from the crowd with their understanding and adaptation of the Dreaming. Luxury travel has now found its newest pasture—one that has fresh, natural, and least processed products that your skin and soul will be grateful for.

The other side of luxury travel is now undoubtedly sustainable travel. It’s time to show the door to petrol guzzlers, and institutions with monstrously big carbon shoe prints. In the world of personal care, now is the time to bid adieu to parabens, petrochemical bi products, dimethicones, and a variety of chemicals also used by morgue technicians to preserve dead bodies. You have an alternative that is pure, natural, and not tried on some poor guinea pig in a cage. Organic spas guarantee the use of such clean products.

Organic spas are all the rage in major Australian cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane which are also big time luxury travel destinations. A commitment to the well being of the planet and the welfare of the customers makes these ventures a strong link in the chain of sustainability. Some of these spas have extended businesses where they grow their own raw materials. Great care is taken to preserve intact the goodness of all materials used. Fair Trade practices are followed wherever possible when goods are sourced from abroad. Active collaboration or advice from the aboriginal people is a great way of enhancing lives in more ways than one. Organic farming of source vegetation required to create creams and emollients becomes a source of employment for aboriginal communities. In return we get the invaluable in terms of ancient wisdom.

Luxury travel in search of authentic relaxation and spa treatments, where all side effects are of the benevolent kind, are made for each other concepts. ‘Have money will spend’ will have better outcomes when that money is spent responsibly. Giving back to nature might not be on everyone’s good deed for the day list. Mainly because most people don’t think that far, or if they do, they can’t think of many ways to do it other than refusing the odd plastic shopping bag. Organic spas are where you can give as good as you get. And down under is where it’s at right now. Let’s sustain this blue marble we call home and replenish the natural glory as best as we can.

For those with a love of musical theatre, combine your next luxury holiday with a night at one of these brilliant theatres in Australia. Here are our selection of Australia's best.

By Karen Cooke

For those with a love of musical theatre, combine your next luxury holiday with a night at one of these brilliant theatres in Australia.

The Lyric Theatre, New South Wales

Sydney is home to a huge number of premier live entertainment venues, so choosing the best is a difficult task. In terms of current line-ups however, Star City’s Lyric Theatre has a great range of live performances on offer.

Throughout its ten year history the Lyric Theatre has hosted a tribe of internationally renowned performers and shows such as Oliver, Mamma Mia! and Priscilla Queen of the Desert — the Musical.

In 2009 this enthralling theatre will become the home of Buddy — the Buddy Holly Story.

Having already earned the reputation of being the ‘Worlds’ Most Successful Rock ‘n’ Roll Musical,’ Buddy has been attended by more than 20 million people in over 16,000 performances worldwide.

The Buddy Holly Story recounts the years prior to his tragic death, in which he became the world’s top recording artist by the tender age of 22. The show features over 20 of Buddy Holly’s greatest hits including Peggy Sue, That’ll Be the Day, Rave On, and many more.

The Regent Theatre, Victoria

The Regent Theatre in Melbourne is a sumptuous theatre reminiscent of days from a bygone era. The Theatre was originally built as a grand picture palace for Frank Thring Senior’s cinema chain, with its interior design intended to evoke faraway times and places.

The Regent has survived a colourful history, having functioned as a cinema, a ballroom, suffered a devastating fire in 1945 and been resurrected, then fallen prey to desolation in the 1970′s. In 1996 the Regent was restored to its former glory, becoming once again the premier venue for theatre and musicals.

Since 1996 the venue has hosted international musicals, including: Sunset Boulevard, Fiddler on the Roof and Disney’s The Lion King. This theatre is the perfect addition to any luxury tour.

Wicked is the latest musical to call the Regent home. Based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire Wicked tells the story of the witches of Oz before they met Dorothy — how two unlikely friends transform into the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland

Your luxury vacation starts here. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) serves as testament to the creative potential of the human spirit. A triumph of design, technical development and construction, QPAC is a monolith housing a number of creative spaces.

QPAC encompasses: the Lyric Theatre, Concert Hall, Playhouse and the Cremorne Theatre.

With a history of sell-out musicals, operas and concerts, QPAC has an unrivalled reputation for providing the right mix of location, service and entertainment. Buddy the Buddy Holly story is set for the Lyric Theatre in 2009, as is the smash hit CHICAGO.

CHICAGO returns for its Australian Premiere at Lyric Theatre, from March 2009 onward.

Honoured with 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards, and a Grammy, an estimated 17 million people have seen CHICAGO in 15,000 performances worldwide. The Times called it “the sharpest, slickest show on the block.”

Burswood Entertainment Centre, Western Australia

The Burswood Entertainment Complex is an entertainment precinct renowned for world-class facilities, situated on the eastern banks of the Swan River, minutes from the CBD and airport.

Burswood boasts a 24-hour casino, 405-room luxury InterContinental Perth Burswood hotel, huge range of restaurants, a nightclub, a 2,300-seat theatre and a 20,000-seat indoor stadium.

Burswood Entertainment Complex welcomes more than 4.5 million visitors a year. In 2009 it will play host to Broadway’s longest running musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. Having played to more than 80 million people in 124 cities around the world, this full-scale production features an extraordinary Australian cast.

Adelaide Entertainment Centre, South Australia

The Adelaide Entertainment Centre has long held the reputation for being one of South Australia’s luxury entertainment venues. With modern architecture and fabulous acoustics, it is the perfect venue for luxury entertainment.

With car parking for over 950 vehicles and its location in the city centre, accessibility is a dream.

In 2009 Disney’s High School Musical will call the Entertainment Centre home. High School Musical is a comedy about Troy, a high school basketball star, and Gabriella, a shy newcomer who sign up together to audition for lead roles in the school musical. This move threatens the social order of the school, throwing East High into uproar, with hilarious results.

Australia is endowed with many hidden 5 star resorts and secluded luxury holiday destinations. Whether you are in the public eye and want to get away from the masses or simply like your privacy, you’re sure to love the following resorts, our pick of the most secluded 5 star resorts in Australia:

1. Bedarra Island, North Queensland

Bedarra Island lies off the coast from Cairns and is perhaps the most private luxurious holiday resort in Australia. It has 16 secluded villas, each luxuriously appointed, in its own rainforest hideaway just minutes to the beach.

Relax on the balcony and soak in the beauty and calm of this private hideaway or take in a relaxing therapeutic massage without leaving your villa. Bedarra has plenty of water activities to enjoy or you can explore the tranquil private beaches.

Enjoy exquisite cuisine on the open-air terrace restaurant with freshly prepared local delicacies on the menu each day. A gourmet hamper or a romantic beach picnic can easily be arranged.

2. Lizard Island, North Queensland

Lizard Island, Australia’s most northern resort, is a unique secluded paradise located on the Great Barrier Reef, 240 kilometres north of Cairns. It is a National Park with a lagoon and 24 soft sandy beaches. This five star resort is truly something out of the ordinary.

On Lizard Island you can enjoy the experience of both the inner and outer reef. Relax with a picnic hamper on a private beach or go snorkelling to see the giant clams, some reputed to be 120 years old and over a metre long. If you prefer, go diving at the world-famous Cod Hole or take a boat ride to the outer reef, renowned for its clarity and the variety of marine life and coral species.

3. Terrigal Hinterland B&B, New South Wales

Terrigal Hinterland B&B offers secluded opulent 5 star resort accommodation for couples. It is located at Wamberal on New South Wales Central Coast. Terrigal Hinterland B&B boasts two luxuriously appointed suites named Joy and Serenity.

Relax in the beautifully appointed guest lounge or take advantage of the sun drenched pool terrace. Enjoy the heated pool which has swim jets for a good work out or a relaxing gentle massage. An in-house massage can be arranged by appointment. Breakfast includes a fresh fruit platter and your choice of hot breakfast from the a la carte menu. For added indulgence, a limousine can be arranged to take you to selected restaurants in the area.

Terrigal Hinterland B&B in its secluded setting has the best of both worlds – the beach and the bush. It has all the comforts of a lavish retreat and still manages to be a harmonious and tranquil hideaway with a personal touch.

4. Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Southern Ocean Lodge is a luxury lodge located on a secluded cliff overlooking views of the wild Southern Ocean and pristine wilderness areas. The Lodge adjoins both the Flinders Chase and Cape Bouguer/Kelly Hill National Parks. The distinctive design makes the most of the spectacular outlook yet remains eco friendly.

Southern Ocean Lodge is a sanctuary of personal intimacy, comfort and style and provides personalised activities and a modern wellness spa.

The spa menu includes traditional and modern techniques. Complementing the international spa design showcase is a spa cuisine program, a chill out lounge and a steam room.

5. Quay West Bunker Bay, Margaret River, Western Australia

Quay West Bunker Bay may be only three hours drive from Perth but this superb 5 star resort is in a secluded location of the South West. The resort overlooks the Indian Ocean and lies within 35 acres of landscaped gardens, with absolute beachfront to the clear waters of Bunker Bay.

Stroll along the boardwalks and through the immaculate grounds, complemented by natural bush and native plants. Feel the pristine white sand between your toes as you walk along the shores of Bunker Bay.

The award-winning ‘Other Side of the Moon’ restaurant offers alfresco dining with local produce featuring strongly on its menu. The cuisine has a definite Mediterranean feel while remaining modern Australian. If you are looking for privacy on your luxurious holiday, you will love any of these most secluded 5 star resorts in Australia.
