By Marc Dias

If you are thinking about going to Brazil, I think you are a very smart person. Brazil is an exciting country with plenty to see and do and a very warm people who love to receive and share with whomever is receptive enough to make friends with them.

I would start by Rio of course. Rio is a very big city and just like any other city around the world, you have to be careful. Rio has many wonderful places that are sure to take the breath away. Corcovado, Sugar Loaf, The Vista Chinesa, Tijuca Forest and so on and so forth. The beaches in Rio are an experience for the newcomer. In Ipanema beach, every day when the sun goes down, everyone watches in silence and finally clap in awe of the beauty of the scenery. The best place to go to the beach in Rio depends on what kind of person you are.

If you are young and want to mingle and see interesting brazilian youth exuding their charm and unbelievably beautiful bodies, go to Posto 9 in Ipanema, where they play footvolley all day, the boys and girls are golden and there’s everything you could possibly want on a beach day for you to enjoy. Vendors walking by selling everything from popsicles to hammocks and sun glasses to shrimp cabobs. The service is nice. Now, if you are a family and you are looking to really just enjoy the sun and beach on a weekday (weekdays are much better at the beach in Rio), then I suggest you try the Barra da Tijuca beach. It is so vast it never really seems to be that full (except on Sundays when the so called ‘suburbanos’ are there). But even then it’s nice.

Personally, I like the Botanical Gardens on Sundays. It’s quiet and nice and you can see a lot of very cool things, feed the fish and pelicans on the pond and rest under a Pau Brasil tree. The beach is way too full to be nice on the weekends. Or to take a nice hike up the many hidden waterfalls that make you forget entirely that you are right in one of the biggest cities in the world. It feels more like a tropical jungle.

If you have plenty of time to really get to know Brazil, like 3 or 4 weeks, I suggest getting a Brazil pass, it’s a ticket that costs around $500 US and that it allows you to travel by air to 5 major brazilian cities. My suggestion goes as follows: Start with Rio because it’s the major hub but don’t spend too much time there. Just enjoy the beauty of it for a few days, take a few of the escorted jeep tours around the forests of Rio, visit Corcovado and Sugar Loaf, go to the beach and then move on. Next stop, Salvador. This is one of the coolest places you are going to be at in the world. It’s a mixture of New Orleans, Kenya, Jamaica and Paradise beaches, all with the Brazilian “tempero” a seasoning that only in Brazil you will find.

In Salvador, you will see Capoeira rodas, music in the streets and art and life everwhere. It’s a must. Since you are already in Bahia, o Morro de Sao Paulo is not too far and neither is Trancoso, these are classical beaches where you need not worry about shoes. It’s all sandy and it doesn’t cost much to stay there either. You will experience a level of warmth and service that might make you want to forget the States and move there. Visit both and then move on.

So, with 4 more air tickets to spend, I’d do the following: Go to the Amazon and take a jungle tour in Manaus. There is no reason not to see the most beautiful rainforest in Brazil and the world and it will enrich your life just to have been there and be able to tell the stories.

Next, a stop in Minas to visit the old town of Ouro Preto which seems like the entire town was sculpted by an artist and it’s fun and sweet. Not very dangerous either. Relax here and take the time to enjoy the best brazilian cuisine you will find in the entire country of Brazil.

After this, on your way back to Rio, go visit Buzios and make sure you get souvenirs there and go walk on rua das Pedras. It’s classy and supposedly Brigitte Bardot (the French actress) used to walk around topless there.

That’s it for today.

Some beaches in Rio have become famous because of the influenced of these beautiful women. With twenty five thousand people for every square kilometer, the city of Copacabana was persistently packed with many beautiful young women within the streets. At the beach, you can find the most attractive girls wearing their thin bikinis. Most of the people are just sitting along the side of the beach in entire day and did nothing but to stare. Beautiful Rio de Janeiro women can be found anywhere around and you can too find a lot of strip clubs, thermas, and massage parlors as well.

The people of Rio are calling themselves as Cariocas. They have that party centered, youthful, fun-loving mindset. They take pleasure in joining a party and most of the women are extremely friendly. The Rio beaches are full of nice eye candy, and athletic tanned bodies. Meeting of Rio de Janeiro women are too easy, since some of the apartments are just close to these beaches. Another option is the Thermas. There you can use a steam room or get massage. At times there are more than one hundred girls dancing with music. These sites also offer private rooms, if in case that you have met the woman that you desire. Strip bars are also great places to visit. Many young gorgeous women can be found in these sites. Now if you are under 20’s, 30’s or 40’s and is interested to see everything that Rio can offer, you are advised to pick up the Rio for Partiers. There you can find all information on Rio women, parties, and clubs that you need.

There are a number of reasons why tourists are attracted to a certain place. One reasons could be that the place may have great historical significance, or that it may host natural wonders that people would like to see. Some examples of these include national parks or museums. On the other hand, there are some places that people go to not because of the sights but because of the events that take place in them. Some of these places include host cities to the World Cup or the Olympics, and cities or places that hold world-famous festivals.
Rio Carnival

The Rio Carnival can trace its roots in ancient African and Portuguese traditions, and the fusion of these traditions led to the birth of the carnival, which started in early in the twentieth century. During that time, samba was incorporated in the carnival being the most famous dance in Brazil. To date, the Rio Carnival is usually held four days before Ash Wednesday and it usually lasts for four days up to two weeks. During the carnival, a usual crowd of about one hundred thousand watches the parade of different samba schools, which perform dances that follow a certain theme. The themes that most schools adapt in their performances include nature, politics, music and art.

Each school also prepares a float on which they would perform and these floats and the other preparations for the carnival usually take several months. The parade usually starts at about seven in the morning and can last up to six in the evening, depending on the number of schools that perform each day.

Going to the Rio Carnival in Brazil is an exciting “adventure” that offers a good way to experience the exotic charms of the country through dance and music. It showcases the talent, the rich history, and culture of Brazil, which Brazilians are more than willing to share with the world.

The name Búzios is derived from Portuguese and refers to a shell fish that was common in the area.

When the French invaded Rio de Janeiro in 1555 they created good relationships with the indians, on the Búzios peninsula it was the tribe Tupinambás. The French built bases with ports. It was for exporting the then valuable brazil wood that these ports were used, pirates and smugglers of other nationalities were also active in this trade. Only in 1615 the Portuguese definitely managed to conquer the French, exports stopped and the activities in the region was limited to fishing and agriculture.

Whaling became important during the 18th century, they were killed and butchered in the region. It´s at this time that todays village Armação dos Búzios came to be, it started as a community for whalers and their families. Praia dos Ossos (Bone Beach) got the name during this time since this is were the whales carcasses were deposited. The whaling abruptly ended with the arrival of super efficient North American whale boats, within years there were hardly any of the big mammals left. in 1768 it was over.

Búzios was also used a stop for ships during the lucrative slave trade. The slave trade had been going on for centuries when Brazil as the last state in the world officially made slavery illegal. It was very common that runaway slaves joined together in communities known as quilombos, on of those was in Praia Rasa. After being freed they settled permanently in the area.

<!--

The fishing really kicked off in the beginning of the 20th century, it was dried salted fish for the markets in Rio that was in demand. Large banana plantations started to produce for worldwide export. The banana era ended abruptly when a vengeful American foreman had cut of
a leg of a local dog that had bitten him, the locals responded with setting the whole plantation on fire. The owner named Honold gave up and never replanted.

In the 1950´s Honolds inheritors started to plot the land and the modern Búzios started to take shape. The land was sold to people from Rio that built vacation homes. A real road was built connecting the small village to Cabo Frio. The era of tourism had started., during this time the village slowly got modernized.

In 1964 a stressed out Brigitte Bardot arrived in Rio de Janeiro. Hundreds of fans met her and the media coverage was massive. Her boyfriend was living in Brazil and had arranged for her to stay in a friends house in Búzios, she loved it so much that she prolonged her stay. The little village got famous in an instant. Images of the mega movie star walking the streets were spread around the world and it´s popularity grew. The village back then was very simple with around 500 inhabitants, a number that today has grown to over 30.000. There is a statue of Brigitte Bardot as well as references to her on almost every corner.

In the late 1970´s you has something called the Argentinian invasion. The bad economy in Argentina made lots of Argentinians invest in Brazil. Búzios was one of the places they concentrated and subsequently still today many pousadas and businesses are run and owned by people from Brazil´s big neighbour in the South.

The town was frequented by rich people and subsequently it developed in an exclusive manner. In 1995 Búzios was separated from the municipality of Cabo Frio and the town got even stream lined towards tourism. After that moment a new “boom” happened and lots of condominiums and houses were built. Exclusive restaurants and swanky pousadas were inaugurated. Rua das Pedras today is lined by boutiques and cafeterias. You also have a active nightlife with some good nightclubs and bars. Some people call it the St Tropez of Brazil.

Hakan Almerfors is Swedish and has been living in Rio de Janeiro since 2003. He has been working with tourists ever since, in 2007 he created the Rio travel information site Gringo-Rio.com

If you want more information about Búzios you can visit this page on his site: Búzios
