When your trump card is one of the most impressive skylines in the world, you would have to be a fool not to make the most of it. And make the most of it Hong Kong does. Best seen from above, and the higher the better, there is no end of luxury hotels competing to offer the best views; be it from the bedrooms or the sanctity of the high rise bar.

Skyscrapers sweep along the harbour from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island, from the Peak to the Peninsula, and with more springing up year on year, how do you choose the best one from which to pop your head in the clouds? Worry not as here are five of the best:

1. The Excelsior

Towering high above the junks in Victoria Harbour, The Excelsior, one of the Mandarin Oriental Group hotels, dominates the Causeway Bay skyline. All 34 floors are fashioned in a classic and contemporary design and make for a comfortable escape from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong’s throbbing streets. Get a room with a view and enjoy what most spectators come to the city for from the comfort of your window seat. For a real head in the clouds moment, venture up to the lesser known TOTTs (Talk of the Town) bar for a cocktail and some of the best views the fragrant harbour has to offer.

2. The Peninsula

An iconic institution on the Kowloon side of the harbour, finding yourself admiring the views from The Peninsula Hotel is akin to finding yourself in the front row of a concert. Luxury radiates from the soft underfoot carpets to the marble bathrooms and views from guest rooms are literally some of the best in town. Pull up a pew of an evening for the daily 8pm light show and watch as the skyline dances in a fantastic display of lights. Alternatively, make a night of it by heading up to the Felix bar and watching the show from the floor to ceiling windows with a glass of bubbles in hand.

3. Sheraton

You know you are on to a winner when even the hotel health club has some fine city views. The Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel and Towers situated on Nathan Road, Kowloon, is a great location from whence to marvel the city panorama and spot the majesty of the infamous Peak. Stylish, simple interiors make the guest rooms a welcome retreat from the hive of activity outside. For exceptional views, head to the Sky Lounge for a cocktail literally in the clouds.

4. Intercontinental

Boasting the largest Presidential Suite in Hong Kong, complete with its own infinity pool, two celebrity restaurants and a reputation for impeccable service, the Intercontinental is a five star indulgence. And with the hotel’s love of all things Feng Shui, guests can rest assured that any stay here is on the relaxing side. The take-your-breath-away views can be found in the Lounge Lobby which means that anyone with a fear of heights can breathe easily and keep their feet, and cocktail, well and truly on ground level.

5. Mandarin Oriental

A jewel amongst the Hong Kong luxury hotels, the 25 floor Mandarin Oriental makes up for in position what it lacks in height. Nestled in one of the most central and convenient spots along the Hong Kong side of the harbour, it is a safe bet for anyone wanting to explore the city. With a mix of decors, guest rooms vary from the more traditional English design to authentic Oriental creations. The piece de resistance, however, can be found in the shape of the M Bar on the 25th floor. Velvet furnishings soften lacquered walls while the lotus bud-shaped bar makes a great feature. Perch on one of the high bar stools as you star gaze out across the harbour and watch the Symphony of Lights bounce right of your crystal champagne glass.
