Discover the charm of Spain today. Experience the country's love of colour and passion, tradition and enjoyment, daring and artistry. The two images are only a hint at Spain's magical diversity. But there are more images that makes it a country of many differences.

By Kristel Van Winkel

TWO IMAGES OF Spain spring to mind and linger there, making the blood race.

The first centres around the bullfight, that extraordinary spectacle of a solitary man confronting a raging beast in a barren arena in front thousands of people. The image of a single, smartly-attired matador standing face-to-face with hundreds of pounds of lethal animal. There is no need to have been to a bullfight, or even to approve of bullfights, to appreciate the emotion generated by the event. To feel the sun blazing down on the aficionados in the stands in the huge open-topped Plaza de Toros; to see the black-clad matador hoist his red cape; to hear the thundering hooves of the bull pounding the ground. Ole! Ole!

Then there is an equally moving but much more serene image centred around the spectacle of the flamenco! For this, the stage may be as grand as the ballroom of a five-star hotel or as simple as the floor of a local tapas bar. Either way the effect is always powerful.

The lights go down, a guitar comes to life and the magnificently dressed dancers begin to weave their magic, their upper bodies held still, their arms moving gracefully, their legs working feverishly, and their heels creating exhilarating rhythms.

These two images suggest all anyone needs to appreciate the charm of Spain today. Together they convey the country’s love of colour and passion, tradition and enjoyment, daring and artistry. But these two images are only a hint at Spain’s magical diversity. Two other images conjure up a very different picture.

The first concern the siesta, that daily reminder that Spain is southern country and blessed with so much sunshine and warmth that everyone feels the need of a few hours of respite during the afternoon. What a charming notion that is! A siesta. How easy it is to sense the stillness of a hot, crystal-bright afternoon, to see the curtains blowing gently in the breeze; to savour the dark, refreshing coolness indoors.

This is the perfect time to reflect that Spaniards recognise there should be some relief from work every day.

An adjunct of the siesta, and just as inspiring, is the Spanish attitude to dining. The tendency to linger over lunch until late in the afternoon and over dinner until way past midnight, as if to say that good food and good company are, if anything, even more important, to a full life, than rest.

The second new image is of Spain as a leading economic force, a country that has transformed itself from a somewhat backward, agrarian-based, society into one thriving on industry and services. Siesta or not, Spain gets the job done. This is obvious in the sleek buildings that line the streets in Madrid, Barcelona and other large cities. It is also obvious in most specific achievements, such as the successful operation of such recent global events as the Barcelona Olympics and the World Exposition in Seville

Bullfight, flamenco, siesta, and industry – these give a reasonable picture of Spain. But other images convey so much more.

Equally symbolic is the country’s coastline, which makes Spain one of the word’s greatest destinations for sea and sand getaways. This coast is so long and varied that it is almost impossible to realise just how rich a choice it include. In fact, Spain’s beaches stretch for hundreds of miles, from the Costa Brava, north of Barcelona, southwards past Valencia and Alicante to Malaga and Marbella on the Costa del Sol, and along the northern, Atlantic, coastline featuring Santander and San Sebastian, and the offer literally hundreds of resort settings. Not content with this cornucopia, Spain has the audacity to offer the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca as well.

Trendy Ibiza’s outrageous street-life is complemented by neighbouring Formentera’s more rustic charms. Mallorca combines the Mediterranean ambience of Palma and its bustling bay-side tourist allure with the ageless Spanish charms, architecture and landscapes of the north and east which have seduced everyone from Habsburg archdukes to George Sand and Chopin. Menorca is a better bet for away-from-it-all resort relaxation. Further afield, 70 Atlantic miles off the coast of Southern Morocco, the Canary Islands, offer intriguing possibilities for sun-seekers and nature lovers alike. Each of the archipelago’s seven volcanic islands has its own distinctive personality. Some boast lush tropical vegetation, poinsettias as tall as trees and dense banana plantations while others offer arid moonscapes of lava rock and sand dunes. At 12, 198 ft, Mt. Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, is snow-capped for several months every year. And the islands feature six national parks and dozens of other environmentally-protected zones.

Tenerife’s tourism allure is dominated by the sprawling south coast resort of Playa de las Americas but places like the provincial capital of Santa Cruz still evoke the islands’ entrancing heritage. Similarly, Gran Canaria offers the combination of southerly resorts and, in the central highlands, a rich evocation of rural Spanish life. The capital Las Palmas is a vibrant Spanish city with an intriguing old quarter. Lanzarote’s stark volcanic landscapes are softened by traditional green-and-white low-rise architecture and some highly attractive beaches.

But despite being extraordinarily blessed with beaches, Spain might just as easily be represented by another, very contradictory image: culture. One only has to recall the names of a new of Spain’s leading painters, from El Greco, Velasquez and Goyta to Dali, to get a glimmer of what the country has to offer in the way of culture. Or to reflect on its equally impressive architecture, from the enchanting Moorish palaces and gardens of the Alhambra in Granada to the mind-boggling Art Nouveau creations of Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona.

Fortunately there’s no need to travel very far to experience the truly amazing diversities Spain has to offer. Barcelona makes this point graphically. It is indisputably one of the leading big cities of the world. It has outstanding luxury hotels, excellent shopping, fascinating historical districts, great restaurants and exciting nightlife. But, reflecting the dual nature of Spain, Barcelona is also one of the world’s great seaside resorts. It is a city. There is a similar broad dimension to many of Spain’s main resorts, these resorts have a sophisticated element, boasting hotels with luxurious, restaurants serving the ultimate in local Spanish cuisine and easy access to such important destinations as Cordoba and Ronda.

Even Madrid follows this pattern. Situated inland, far away from Spain’s beaches, it is primarily admired for the quality of its shopping, its grand boulevards and non-stop night life, but it provides some surprising alternatives to urban life. For instance, one of its greatest attractions is the Casa del Campo, a 4,000-acre area of heath and woodland replete with an amusement park and zoo, and it is only a short distance away from a host of smaller but world famous jewels such as Toledo, Segovia, Aranjuez, and Escorial. Then there’s spectacularly historic Sevilla and the creative powerhouse of Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city.

It also offers bullfighting, flamenco, and la siesta. Ole!

Although it is a very small island off the coast of Canary Islands in Spain, it is overwhelming with fame. Blessed with varieties of vegetation around the island and a great natural beauty, the place can be called the most preferred tourist spot.

Places of visit:

There is a volcano called the El Golfo on the Island. The lava from the volcano drops into the sea from a height of about 700 meters. This is a most spectacular view on this island which can be viewed from as near as possible. The lava drops at many points into the sea. The island is rich in cliffs. These huge cliffs are declared a national treasure, because according to scientists these cliffs have much geo- morphological importance. In fact many scientific studies are still going on in this regard. One of the most important cliffs is called Timiijiraque which is a very huge cliff surrounded by natural vegetation.

In the midst of this Island is a beautiful mountain called the Ventejis. The spellbound beauty of the mountain should be seen rather than explained. History says that it was here that a great storm knocked the Garoe Holy Tree. That was in the 17th Century.

There is a great National Park. This Frontera Rural national park is the largest park. The park is rich in many varieties of rarest species of plants. This is the most ideal place for spending a quiet day walking and relaxing. Those who are interested in having a look at the great natural carvings of rocks should visit El Julan. The natural fury can be seen in the La Restinga volcano area.

Every city of Spain has museums and so also this Island. The El Hierro Craft Centre located in Valverde is worth visiting. There is also another great museum located in Frontera. This museum called the Guinea Eco museum concentrates more on the ecological aspects.

The hotels serve the famous Vina Frontera Blanco white wine and many of the most delicious local specialties. There are many villas and hotels to care for the tourist.

Spanish music is known for its vibrancy and passion; from Flamenco dancing to Spanish guitar, its music is famous. With so many luxury hotels in Spain to choose from, you could combine a holiday of pampering and luxury, with traditional Spanish music and dance your nights away.

Flamenco

Why not centre a tailor made holiday in Spain around flamenco dancing? You could bring out your inner passion as your swing your hips in a local night club, returning to your luxury Spain hotel exhausted but invigorated. It would certainly be a different experience.

Flamenco music dates back to late 18th century. It is thought to have originated in Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera and Triana. It is made up of three essential elements: the dance (baile), the guitar (guitarra) and the song (cante). Flamenco needs to be appreciated from all three angles, and a tailor made holiday in Spain will allow you to do just that.

Folk Music Across Spain

Depending on which region you choose for your luxury Spain holiday, a range of folk music traditions can be heard. Traditional folk music is still alive in Spain today, and you could well experience its rich history and rhythmic sounds while on a tailor made Spain holiday.

In western Andalusia gaita rociera (a kind of 3-hole pipe) is a commonly used instrument in the traditional folk music of the region. And if your tailor made Spain holiday takes you to Malaga, violin and plucked-strings will more likely be the instruments you’ll hear when listening to traditional bands.

While popular across Spain, Jota is a musical form which could have originated in the Southern part of Aragon. If your tailor made Spain holiday should take you to this region, you will likely hear music performed on castanet, guitar, tambourines, bandurria and flute. Jota is a rich musical form, and is inspirational to listen to. With strong percussive sounds, the music has a distinctly North African feel. Coupled with a stay in a luxury Spain hotel, you could have an excellent holiday in this destination.

Spanish Popular Music

One of the primary historical landmarks for Spanish pop music was the Benidorm International Song Festival, founded in 1959 in Benidorm. This was a platform for international performers to play to a Spanish audience, and the festival’s success led to the creation of similar festivals across Spain. It would be a great musical addition to a tailor made Spain holiday if you timed your trip with one of the festivals. These festivals were the breeding ground for many up-and-coming Spanish musicians, allowing them to find their performing feet on home ground. One such iconic Spanish singer who has gained international acclaim is Julio Iglesias.

It was in the 1980s that the Spanish music industry really took off on the international market. This decade saw the cultural reawakening of La Movida Madrilena, which is still evident in Spanish music today. Contemporary Spanish popular music spans across international genres such as rock, ska, reggae blues and hip-hop, and a tailor made Spain holiday could well include enjoying the country’s musical entertainment.

So you are traveling to Spain and planning to visit Barcelona while you are there, but the thought of staying in a noisy, busy, city centre hotel leaves you cold? Don’t worry, there are other options when it comes to Barcelona hotels, and the following couple of suggestions should make for a mush more relaxed trip.

The first suggestion is to try one of the superb four star hotels at the Port Aventura theme park, only a short distance outside the centre, rather than a hotel in Barcelona city itself. It is possible to get a dedicated transfer from Barcelona’s main airport, directly to the theme park, which will drop you right outside your hotel. Of course, you can always hire a car and drive yourself to the theme park, and if you do, remember that Europcar have special arrangements with the Port Aventura hotels to ensure you get the best deal.

The four hotels available each have their own particular character and are decorated and furnished to a very high level. Whichever you choose you will be guaranteed a luxurious visit. If you are looking for classic Mediterranean style you might try the Portaventura hotel, whilst for something a little different, the El Paso hotel has a Mexican theme. If you are after sheer indulgence and the chance to sunbath by the pool on pure white sand, The Hotel Caribe is for you.

As well as bed and breakfast, the very reasonable prices charged by the Port Aventura hotels also include entrance to the theme park and the Caribe Aquatic Centre. Even during the summer months, an expensive period for all hotels in Spain, a night in the hotel with two days in the theme park is just over two hundred euros for a single, and less than one hundred and fifty per person for a double. To reduce the cost even further, you can have a room for up to four people. Out of season, when it is still possible to enjoy good weather in this region, two people could pay less than one hundred euros.

If you want to be a little closer to Barcelona city centre, but are still looking for a luxurious option, away from the crowds of La Rambla, you should check into the Arts Hotle, which offers an incredible sea front location with views over the whole Marina and port area. This is a place to really be pampered, and any of the spacious rooms, suites or split-level apartments, offer an uneatable standard of accommodation. The real gem in this hotel is the Goyescas restaurant, were the extensive menu includes local specialties as well as international cuisine. If you are having trouble deciding between the mouthwatering dishes, a recommendation from the friendly staff may help you make up you mind. They will even tell you the perfect wine to accompany your meal.

So as you can see, it is perfectly possible to enjoy the cultural and historical sights of Barcelona, without having to stay right in the bustling city centre. After a hard day’s sightseeing you return to a calm relaxing oasis, just a short ride away.

Did you know that Barcelona had a beach?

In fact there are several Barcelona beach areas and they rival the best that the rest of Spain can offer. There are almost five kilometres of sand in the Barcelona region and – on a hot dry day – a visit there really is a great option.

The Catalan capital has become a much favoured and much talked about destination for travellers in recent years. Ever since it hosted the Olympic Games and regenerated itself as a result it has grown its reputation year by year. There are only a few cities in the world that can now rival Barcelona for the buzz and warmth of a modern vacation city destination. Whether your interests lie in food and eating out, history ancient or modern, shopping or simply chilling in a bar or night club – you are sure to find something wonderful here.

Barceloneta is the main and most popular beach area in Barcelona. Its near to the city centre and easy to access. Wide, with wooden decking – it draws the windsurfing and kite surfing crowds in spring and summer. There is lots of space for sunbathing and simple relaxation and the access to the sea is easy along the whole length of the sands. Food is available from a range of nearby restaurants and car access is easy with lots of parking nearby. The Christopher Columbus memorial is situated near to the beach if you are interested in that sort of history.

When Barcelona hosted the Olympic Games a large new marina was built to house the sailing and watersports section of the events. Near to the Olympic marina lies Nova Icaria beach. The area is well maintained and kept very clean by the city council. Disabled access is possible; there are lifeguards, sun beds and showers to use after your swim or your day on the sand. Food and snacks can be had from several bars on the beach and there are other restaurants on the promenade and at the nearby marina. This is a very popular spot with the young people of the city.

If naturism or nudism is your thing then head for Mar Bella beach – it is a common destination for windsurfers and kayak fans – and you can keep your shorts on if you want to! The beach is secluded and much quieter than the others.

Getting to Barcelona is easy these days and the city is a perfect break away destination. Provided you avoid the weekends you should have no problem in picking up a cheap flight deal. Accommodation is slightly cheaper in the outlying districts but don’t forget to factor in the money you will spend on bus or metro travel. Check out the city centre hostels or tourist apartments for some great deals.

The best way to get around is on foot although the tourist bus service is cheap, dependable and flexible. You will also find that the underground train or metro system is really easy to navigate and the stations service all the popular areas and destinations.

Barcelona is a wonderful city – see you there soon?
