By Josy Kinney

The nation of Qatar has numerous tourist attractions for any visitor or native to the country. Rich in history, there’s a wide selection of places to visit and sights to see in this Arab nation, whether you have an academic interest in the country, are looking to have some fun, or want to experience life in the luxurious comfort of one of the wealthiest nations in the world.

Doha, the capital of Qatar, is resplendent with hotels, restaurants, and more for the visiting tourist. The Corniche Bay, a seven kilometer long ocean front, is one of the most beautiful sights in the entire peninsula. Featuring paved walking paths and a variety of shops and restaurants, it’s a must visit for anyone in the capital city. The Al Bida Park, known as the best picnic spot in Doha, is part of the Corniche Bay area, and is host to some of the more upscale businesses of the area.

Also featured in Doha are a number of museums. The Qatar National Museum showcases the culture of the Qatari people; it’s been in operation since 1901, when it was converted from the former palace of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Qassim Al Thani. The ‘Wind Tower House’ is host to the Ethnographic Museum, which depicts the history of the development of Doha and Qatar from the emirate it once was to the financial power house it is now. Other museums in Qatar outside of Doha are the Al Khor Museum, located a little over 50 kilometers to the north of Doha, the Al Wakra museum less than 20 kilometers south of the capital, and the Weaponry Museum.

The first of these is a museum dedicated to anthropological studies of Qatar, its life, and its people. The Al Khor museum heavily features information on fishing and marine life, as the city has long been famous for its port activities. The Al Wakra museum likewise has some sections on the life that’s grown in Qatar, though it is more focused on preserving artifacts from previous and current Qatari generations, as well as showcasing the architecture and technology of the thousands of years of history of this nation. The aptly named Weaponry Museum has multiple exhibits displaying over twenty-one hundred items, covering a wide range from ancient swords to modern firearms.

There are also other parks and attractions in Qatar, for those looking to spend more time outside and not as comfortable in the confines of a museum. Aladdin’s Kingdom is an amusement park located in the West Bay region; it boasts 18 different rides suitable for all ages, and is part of a landscaping project that introduced numerous greenspaces as well as an artificial lagoon to the area. Other amenities in the park include a cafeteria, theatre, and separate mosques for separate genders. For animal lovers, the Doha Zoo just off of the Salwa highway has an exotic collection of animals both from the local ecosystems as well as from neighboring and far off countries. While it doesn’t feature as heavily on the ‘fun’ scale as The Kingdom does, the Zoo does have its own recreation and amusement section for kids who are not interested in the wildlife on display.

Qatar also is host to numerous historical landmarks: Dukhan, a little over eighty kilometers from Doha, is the original place in Qatar where oil was found, the singular event that transformed a once meek fishing and pearling nation into the resource powerhouse it is today. Al Zubra is a city that hosts a now disused fort, which was up until the 1980’s a functional military base planted square in the middle of an ancient castle.

All in all there are many, many sites to visit in Qatar, probably more than one can see in just one visit! Whether it’s the beautiful sandy beaches all over the nation’s shores or the artificially created Palm Tree Island resort, there’s a great number of wonderful tourist attractions inside and out of Doha.

Puerto Rico is known worldwide for its pristine beaches and luxury resorts. Travelers come to this Caribbean Island paradise to take advantage of the natural beauty and luxury Puerto Rico Resorts. What many don’t get to experience are the ‘untouched’ natural wonders found in this fascinating country.

Located in the Mona Passage, Mona Island is something you don’t read much about. This natural preserve is a flat plateau surrounded by dazzling cliffs on most sides. On Mona, you’ll find many species that are either endangered or cannot be found anywhere else in the world. If is for this reason that Mona is often compared to the Galapagos Islands.

Take a tour of Mona and you’ll find countless species of animals. On land, the Mona Iguana freely roams the island but cannot be found anywhere else in the world. You’ll also find several species of rare birds. In the ocean, several endangered species of sea turtles swim freely amongst the unspoiled mangroves and rich coral reefs. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of dolphins or humpback whales.

Things to do in Mona
Most visitors spend a great deal of time exploring the island. With plenty to see, this can easily keep your attention for your entire visit. For ocean-lovers, it has been said that Mona offers some of the best snorkeling and diving in the Caribbean. Healthy coral reefs, clear visibility and warm waters attract ocean-lovers from around the world to this island paradise.

Camping in Mona
You won’t find any hotels on Mona. In fact, the only way to stay overnight is to pitch a tent on the inland. Camping is allowed on three different beaches and is restricted to weekends-only during hunting season.

Getting to Mona

Accessing Mona can be done from the towns of Mayaguez and Cabo Rojo in Puerto Rico. Charter boats carry visitors to the island. Since the trip takes 6 hours, you may want to plan to spend at least a couple days.

Next time you’re in Puerto Rico, consider spending a couple days of your vacation in the natural wonder that is Mona Island.

Enid Glasgow is a travel writer who enjoys traveling in the Americas and Caribbean. When visiting Puerto Rico, she stays at luxury hotels in Puerto Rico like Gran Melia.

If you’re after somewhere a little bit different to stay, why not try out one of Dubai’s quirkiest hotels, guaranteed to be an entirely unique experience.

The newly opened Atlantis the Palm, is a luxury 5 star hotel with its own water-park; Aquaventure is ready for you to unleash your inner child and go wild. But whether it’s the near-vertical Leap of Faith and its shark-invested lagoon, the river rapids or the countless slides, rides and plunge pools – the world’s most adventurous water park has something for everyone. Meanwhile, if you love the water but enjoy a more relaxing atmosphere, how about staying in Atlantis’s underwater suite; here you will find your room surrounded by the soothing lagoon – 65,000 fish and marine species.

If you prefer a more secluded, intimate resort then you may wish to stay at the Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa. An eco-friendly resort made up of Bedouin-style tents dotted across the reserve and framed by the Hajar Mountains, the Al Maha is all about intimacy and privacy. With your own private pool and veranda, a choice of desert activities and a stunning setting, the Al Maha is

If you’re torn between a ski holiday and a beach holiday, and just can’t seem to make up your mind, then why not do both? At the Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates, you can stay in either a stylish room or a ski chalet. You can take to the slopes of the indoor ski complex and ski, or snowboard on authentic snow all year round. Then when you feel like a bit of sun, you can make your way out to one of Dubai’s stunning beaches.

The Burj Al Arab is arguably one of the world’s most iconic hotels; shaped like a billowing sail and situated on its own manmade island, the Burj Al Arab seems less about quirky and more about luxury. However, with its memorable Al Mahara restaurant and the unique simulated submarine ride you take to get there, this hotel matches its luxury with an unconventional edge.

Based on the shape of a breaking wave, the Jumeirah Beach resort is stunning to look at. With unlimited access to the Wild Wadi, one of the world’s most technically-advanced water parks in the world, you can see Jumeirah’s quirky side. And if you’re feeling brave, why not hurtle at 50mph down the Jumeirah Sceirah flume, or be fired uphill on the Master Blaster, clinging to your inflatable ring!

However, regardless of the type of hotel you choose to stay in, Dubai holidays have something to offer every visitor. And with so many quirky hotels available to choose from, the most difficult decision you may have is deciding which hotel best suits your Dubai holiday needs.
