Staying a Motivated Traveler
Americans are a swaggering type. We love to hear about a good adventure and even more so to experience one ourselves. Yet when it comes to travel we seem to never manage to make it out beyond our borders. Only 30% of U.S. citizens have passports, an indicator of how rarely we as a people decide to see the world. For many it’s unfortunately financial, but for most, it’s a lack of motivation. While a trip to Disney takes no intense preparation besides a few brochures, traveling abroad takes careful planning and sacred saving. But if you can encourage yourself to seek adventures elsewhere besides your comfort zone, you can easily find the desire and the dedication that makes such experiences possible.

Keep in mind the following ways to help motivate yourself to travel farther and more often:

-Staying Informed

It’s incredibly easy to forget about the outside world when living in the United States. We’re massive and do a pretty good job keeping ourselves busy with news and information. But even if it’s just by watching travel shows or visiting travel websites, staying informed about the world around you is a great way to stay motivated to go see it yourself someday.

-Staying in Shape

Being unhealthy and in poor physical shape leads us to be less likely to want to get up and go anywhere. It’s vital that you stay fit if foreign travel is your dream. We all have our chosen way to burn calories – hiking, cycling, running, tennis, et cetera – find yours and stick with it so you can remain in both the physical and mental shape that extensive travel demands.

-Staying in the Black

As stated earlier, many Americans never see foreign lands because getting there is too expensive. Flying a family of four round trip from the Midwest to Europe can be close to $5000. When making huge financial decisions such as taking on a mortgage or a car loan – take any future plans for travel into consideration. If it’s important enough of a goal, budget it over the long-term and avoid digging yourself into too deep a ditch that such costly travel is out of the question for decades.

-Staying Inspired

The previous three add up to this one. You’ll never go anywhere just by watching travel shows, just by staying healthy, or just by staying financially fit. Combining these dedications into a determination to travel to a faraway land is the only way you’ll ever find yourself actually doing it. Otherwise you’ll forgo the pricy and hard to plan foreign travel plans to go somewhere closer and more familiar. Your inspiration to go somewhere new will only diminish over time.

Don’t let your lifetime pass you by without taking the time to see the innumerable unforgettable sites around the world. It requires perseverance, but such is the stuff of any true traveler.
