Copenhagen is a serene cosmopolitan city compiled of a number of areas, each with its own distinctive charm, but all share something in common – each is surrounded by water, parks and winding bicycle paths. This is a great city to explore either by walking, cycling or via a canal tour.

When visiting Copenhagen, here are the highlights you won’t want to miss:

Tivoli Gardens is one of the oldest amusements parks and magical pleasure garden in the world, which provided inspiration for the creation of Disneyland. Try out the rides, stroll through the romantic gardens or enjoy one of many free concerts. The park opens daily from Apri 15th through September 26th.

The main character in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, the Little Mermaid, is Copenhagen’s landmark, and the most photographed statue in the world.

Kronberg Castle is known as the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and is Denmark’s most famous castle. View the royal tapestries on display, as well as modern art from resident Danish artists in their working studios. The Royal Chambers, historical suites, ballroom, Chapel and casemates, an underground system of corridors and rooms are open to the public.

At 1.1 kilometers in length, Stroget Street is the world’s longest car-free street, designed for pedestrian to shop. Even bicycles have been banned. Here you will find everything from budget-friendly chains to expensive international brands. While shopping you can also take in some of the popular sites such as the Church of our Lady, the court house and the Stork Fountain.

Staten’s Museum for Kuns, also known as the Danish National Gallery, is the only place in Denmark that features 700 years of Western art and cultural history under one roof. The Gallery is home to over 9,000 pieces from the 12th century to modern day painters and sculptors.

Canal Tours are one of the best ways to see many of the city’s major attractions. Or, take the water bus, which provides hop-on-hop off service so you can meander on your own.

Vesterbro used to be known as Copenhagen’s as the red light district, and was not one of the cleanest nor most desirable areas to visit, but has now been transformed into a very clean, popular place to not only live, but also popular for shopping, restaurants and bars.
