Punta del Este - Top 5 Tips
GOOD TO KNOW
THESE ARE THE 5 THINGS WE WISHED SOMEONE WOULD’VE TOLD US. IN MANY CASES IT COULD’VE SAVED TIME, SANITY AND TOLL MONEY!
1. BRING COLD HARD U.S. CASH
With the US Dollar becoming the red-headed step child of the world. It’s nice to know that places still exist where your dollar is really worth something! In Punta del Este, there is no need to worry about exchange rates and how much money you’ll lose. Many restaurants and retailers offer discounts if you pay in US currency. However, that being said, there are not very many ATM’s or banks so cashing travelers checks or getting cash on the spot can be difficult. Punta del Este is remarkably safe, especially for South America. So if you are comfortable traveling with more cash than usual, it will have a pay off for you in the end. Also, some of the finer restaurants will only accept cash, no credit cards at all (don’t be mad, we’ve heard that it can sometimes take up to forty-five days for them to be paid by the credit card companies!)
2. GETTING TO PUNTA EASILY
Flying into Punta del Este’s airport is only accessible by flying first to Buenos Aires and then taking a small plane over to Punta. This is the easiest way to get there. If that doesn’t work for you, you can also fly into Montivideo and make the 90 minute drive to Punta del Este.
3. A RENTAL CAR IS A MUST
Punta del Este is one of those places where a car is a MUST. There are so many different beaches and little towns to check our, that you’ll be happy you have your own wheels. You can pick up a car at the airport. However, during the season you should make a reservation at least six-months in advance. Try Punta Car. www.puntacar.com.uy
4. FASHION IS A PRIORITY
Whether you are hanging out at the beach or in the night club, fashion is a high priority. The South Americans are always looking their best. So, bring you Fashion “A” Game and enjoy feeling beautiful every day.
5. CHECK OUT THE HOUSES
You’ll want to buy a Punta beach house, especially once you find out how cheap the land and building costs are! It’s a great idea but only if you have the cash. Uruguay does not allow home loans or mortgages!
